The previous Halloween benefited from decent reviews ( 79% fresh and 6.8/10 on Rotten Tomatoes), and oodles of free publicity stemming from Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Laurie Strode and the “legacy sequels are so hot right now” trend. This is not-so-much a “successful disappointment” (how a film might have opened had it underwhelmed in non-Covid times) but a business-as-usual breakout debut. Sure, the previous Halloween opened with $76 million in October 2018, but this follow-up was never going to replicate that. But I do know that Blumhouse and Universal’s $20 million horror flick opened with $50.35 million in its domestic debut, which is pretty damn close to where it likely would have ended up in a non-Covid/non-Peacock world. Nor do I know how many households made the proactive choice to subscribe to Peacock so that they could watch the Jamie Lee Curtis-starring sequel from the comfort of home. I don’t know how many people watched Halloween Kills ( review) on Peacock this weekend.
